U+A was commissioned to design and supervise the construction of Emaar’s first 3D printed Villa in Dubai, UAE. The custom designed 140sqm villa was developed as a prototype for larger communities requiring fast paced, cost efficient dwellings.
The 3D printed home received a number of awards, including the coveted ‘Smart Project of the Year' in 2019 under Consultant Middle-East Magazine.

Concept
U+A was commissioned to undertake the concept design of a 3D printed home that would serve as a module in design and workflow for future endeavors, which is to be located at The Arabian Ranches III — Sun. This project will serve as a precursor to a paradigm shift in architecture and the built industry, challenging traditional methods of construction and design. It will pave the road to improving on more traditional methods of design and construction that will propel the industry towards a more efficient, responsible and educated future. While the one ground floor home will be fully functional and contain all the necessary requirements for a comfortable and smart living style, it will provide a previously unimagined degree of freedom in terms of design and accessibility in terms of social responsibility.

Design
The design direction to which we knew we needed to adhere to from the get go was one where several criteria and needs needed to be addressed, such as comfort, smart and green living as well as bearing in mind the gravity of the task at hand and not sacrificing on creative aspects. In order to remain faithful to our vision, which is to build a home in every sense of the word, but one that also moves away from traditional constraints and one that employs advanced design tools and the use of 3D printed models were necessary for an educated design and decision making process. Drawing on the natural process present in nature and in the human form, our design and accepted proposal emerged through process, evolution and emergence.

A good design is that which balances aesthetics and functionality to create a holistic experience both externally and internally, maintaining comfortable and proportionally viable and well-lit interior spaces. Although the design is quite dynamic and avoids the traditional notion of a rectilinear ‘room', the space planning adheres to the standards set out by Emaar to ensure proper pragmatism and pleasant space proportions.
